Canvassed North American tailoring, altered here by our own tailor.
Samuelsohn suits and sport coats at The Man’s Shop in Arlington. North American tailored clothing with substantial construction — canvassed fronts and a shoulder that holds its shape, altered here by our own tailor. We are in downtown Arlington and serve the whole metroplex.
What matters
Worth knowing
- What it is
- North American tailored clothing, made with canvassed construction rather than fused.
- Canvassed front
- The jacket molds to you over time instead of staying flat. It is the main thing you are paying for.
- Shoulder
- Holds its line without being stiff, which is the hardest balance in a jacket.
- Cloth
- Serious mills. Ask to see the weight, since it decides how the jacket wears here.
- Altered on site
- Everything adjusted by Enrique in this building.
- Who it suits
- Anyone wearing a jacket weekly, where construction earns back its cost.
- Against custom
- A canvassed off-the-rack jacket, properly altered, beats a mediocre custom one.
- Cloth weight
- Ask for it. In this climate it decides how many months a year the jacket gets worn.

Common questions
Tailored clothing, answered
What does canvassed construction mean?
A layer of canvas is stitched between the cloth and the lining rather than glued, so the jacket molds to your shape over time. A fused jacket stays flat and eventually bubbles. It is most of the difference in price.
How can I tell if a jacket is canvassed?
Pinch the cloth at the front, below the buttonhole. If you can feel a separate layer moving between the outer cloth and the lining, it is canvassed. If it feels like one solid piece, it is fused.
Do you alter it here?
Yes, all of it, by Enrique on site. On a canvassed jacket the alterations matter more, because the garment is meant to work with your shape rather than against it.
How long do alterations take?
It depends on the work and the queue, and we give you a date rather than a vague answer. A hem is quick; recutting a canvassed jacket is not, and it should not be rushed.
