Men’s sportswear at The Man’s Shop in Arlington — knitwear, polos, casual trousers and outerwear. Chosen for fit and how it wears rather than for a season, and altered on site like everything else we sell. The same standards apply as to the tailoring.
What matters
Worth knowing
- Knitwear
- Merino and cotton in fine gauges that layer under a jacket, plus heavier pieces for wearing alone.
- Polos
- Both weekend weights and finer knits with a collar that stands up under a lapel.
- Casual trousers
- Chinos and five-pockets, hemmed here with your shoes on.
- Outerwear
- Field jackets, quilted pieces and light shells, sized to layer over a sport coat rather than under one.
- Alterations
- Sportswear gets altered too. A hem and a sleeve length change how a casual outfit reads more than most men expect.
The process
Two visits, not five
- First appointment
- About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
- Build
- Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
- Collection
- Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
- Alterations
- Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
- Afterwards
- Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

What counts as sportswear?
Everything that is not tailored clothing — knitwear, polos, casual trousers, denim and outerwear. The term is old-fashioned but it usefully separates what we sell from athletic clothing, which we do not.
How should a polo fit?
The sleeve should end mid-bicep and stop there rather than flapping, and the body should skim without clinging. The collar is the part that separates a good polo from a cheap one — it should stand rather than curl.
Should sportswear fit differently from tailoring?
Slightly looser through the body, but the shoulder rule does not change. If the shoulder seam is not sitting where your shoulder ends, the garment is the wrong size regardless of how casual it is.

100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, parking beside the building. Monday to Saturday, ten until five, closed Sundays.
