Yes — The Man’s Shop alters clothing we did not sell you. Bring in online purchases, department store suits, or inherited garments. Our in-house tailor fits the piece on you and quotes the work before starting. Most jobs return in one to two weeks. If a garment isn’t worth altering, we will say so.
The honest part
Some garments are worth it. Some aren’t.
A tailor can move a great deal. He cannot move everything. The difference between those two categories is the most useful thing we can tell you, and it costs you nothing to find out.
Sleeves, waists, trouser length, taper, and shirt bodies are routine. A jacket that is one size too large through the body can usually be brought in convincingly. A jacket whose shoulders sit wrong on you is a harder, costlier problem, and sometimes the answer is that you are better off spending the alteration budget on something that fits.
We would rather give you that answer than take the work. You will come back for the next thing, and probably for the thing after that.

Where clothes come from
- Online orders
- The most common by far. Buying tailored clothing from photographs means guessing, and most of what arrives is fixable. Bring it before the return window closes so you have both options open.
- Department store suits
- Usually cut generously so they fit the widest possible range of men. Taking one in properly is often the difference between a suit that looks cheap and one that doesn’t.
- Inherited garments
- Your father’s dinner jacket, your grandfather’s overcoat. Older tailoring frequently has generous seam allowances, which means more can be moved than you would expect. These are our favorite jobs.
- Wedding and event pieces
- Bought online for a date that is approaching fast. Bring it in with at least two weeks to spare and we can usually save it.
- Weight change
- Up or down. A wardrobe that no longer fits is often a fraction of the cost to alter than to replace, particularly for jackets with room left in the seams.
How it works
No appointment, no obligation
Come in and put it on
Monday through Saturday, ten to five. Wear the shoes you would wear with it. Ten minutes on the floor answers most questions.
Get a real number
We quote the work with the garment on you, before anything starts. You are free to walk out with it unaltered and think about it.
One to two weeks
Standard turnaround. Working against an event date? Say so up front and we will tell you honestly whether it fits the schedule.

Will you alter a suit I bought somewhere else?
Yes. We regularly alter garments we did not sell, including online purchases, department store suits, and inherited pieces. Bring the item in during business hours, put it on, and our tailor will assess it and quote the work before anything begins.
Do I need an appointment to bring in alterations?
No. You can come in Monday through Saturday between ten and five. Calling ahead is worthwhile if you want a longer consultation or you are working against an event deadline, but it is not required for a straightforward assessment.
Is it worth altering a cheap suit?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and we will tell you which. Taking in a generously cut department store suit often makes a dramatic difference for modest money. Structural problems such as shoulders that sit wrong are a different matter, and on an inexpensive garment the alteration can cost more than the suit is worth.
Can you alter a suit I bought online?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do. Buying tailored clothing from photographs means guessing at fit, and much of what arrives can be improved substantially. Bring it in before your return window closes so you keep both options available.
Can you alter my father’s or grandfather’s jacket?
Often, yes, and these are among the most rewarding jobs in the shop. Older tailoring frequently carries generous seam allowances, which means more cloth is available to move than in modern garments. Bring it in and we will tell you what is possible.
How long will alterations take?
Most standard work returns within one to two weeks. Busy seasons around weddings, graduations, and the holidays run longer. If you have a firm date, tell us at drop-off and we will give you a straight answer rather than a hopeful one.
