Every promise on this website ultimately rests on one man in a room at the back of the shop. Worth introducing him properly.
Enrique has been the master tailor at The Man’s Shop for more than twenty years. All alterations are done in-house in Arlington, Texas, including garments bought elsewhere. He fits each piece on you before touching it, which is why our custom program can promise adjustments in days rather than weeks.
Why it matters
The difference between a promise and a shipping label
Most menswear shops send alterations out. The garment leaves, someone you will never meet makes a judgment call, and it returns a week later either right or wrong.
Ours does not leave the building. Enrique fits the garment on you before he touches it, and if something needs a second look you are standing in front of him rather than describing it over a counter.
This is also what makes our custom program work. When a made-to-measure garment arrives and wants a quarter inch off a sleeve, that is a conversation and a few days — not a shipping label and six weeks.
What he can do
And what he will tell you honestly
- Routine and quick
- Trouser hems, tapers, waist adjustment, sleeve length, shirt bodies. The everyday work that transforms how clothing reads.
- Involved but worthwhile
- Jacket waist and sides, trouser rise and seat, formalwear. More labour, still very often worth it.
- Difficult and expensive
- Shoulders. The sleeve comes off and the canvas is affected. Worth doing on a garment you love or inherited; rarely otherwise.
- Not worth doing
- Sometimes the honest answer is that the alteration costs more than the garment merits. You will get that answer rather than an invoice.
- Inherited pieces
- Older tailoring often carries generous seam allowances, so more can be moved than you would expect. These are the jobs he enjoys most.

Come during business hours
Monday to Saturday, ten to five. Wear the shoes or boots you will wear with the garment.
Put it on
Break is judged standing, on you. A measurement taken from another garment is a guess.
Get a number
Quoted before any work starts. You are free to take it home and think about it.

Who does the alterations at The Man’s Shop?
Enrique, our master tailor, who has run our alterations room for more than twenty years. All work is done in-house in Arlington rather than sent out, and he fits each garment on you before beginning.
Do you alter clothing bought somewhere else?
Yes, routinely. Online purchases, department store suits, and inherited garments are all welcome. You will get an honest assessment of what can be improved and what cannot, including when the alteration is not worth the cost.
Why does having a tailor on site matter?
Because it turns a promise into something immediate. A made-to-measure garment that wants a small adjustment on arrival is handled in days rather than shipped back to a factory, and if something is not right you are standing in front of the person who will fix it.
What is the hardest alteration to make?
Shoulder work. The sleeve has to come off and the jacket’s canvas is affected, making it the most labour-intensive job in the room. It is worth doing on a garment with real value or sentiment and rarely worth doing otherwise.
Can he alter my father’s or grandfather’s suit?
Often, and these are among the most rewarding jobs in the shop. Older tailoring frequently has generous seam allowances, so more cloth is available to move than in most modern garments. Bring it in and he will tell you what is possible.
Do I need an appointment for alterations?
No. Come in Monday to Saturday between ten and five. Calling ahead helps if you want a longer consultation or you are working against an event deadline.
