Ballin trousers at The Man’s Shop in Arlington, hemmed on site by our own tailor. Dress trousers in a range of cuts and cloths, fitted and finished here rather than sent away, with your shoes on when the length is decided.

- Cut
- Several rises and leg shapes. The rise matters more than the label and is the first thing we look at.
- Cloth
- Year-round worsteds through to genuinely lightweight cloths for summer. In this climate the light end gets more wear.
- Hemming
- Done here, standing, in your shoes. Cuffed or plain, decided when you can see it.
- Waist adjustment
- Straightforward on a good trouser, and worth doing rather than living with a belt pulled tight.
- Buying pairs
- Two in the base palette do more work than four in different colors.
The process
Two visits, not five
- First appointment
- About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
- Build
- Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
- Collection
- Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
- Alterations
- Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
- Afterwards
- Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

Trousers, answered
How should dress trousers fit at the waist?
Snugly enough to stay up without a belt doing the work. If you are relying on the belt to hold them, the waist needs taking in, which is a straightforward alteration on a well-made trouser.
Cuffed or plain hem?
Cuffs suit a fuller leg and a higher rise, and add a little weight that helps the trouser hang. A plain hem is cleaner and slightly more formal. Neither is wrong, and we will show you both before deciding.
How much break should there be?
A slight break for most men — the trouser just touching the shoe with a small fold. It is judged standing in the shoes you will wear, which is why we hem here rather than guessing.
Where are you and what are your hours?
100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, parking beside the building. Monday to Saturday, ten until five, closed Sundays.
