The problem with buying boots online
Try, return, repeat
Buying boots from photographs means ordering two sizes, waiting, walking around the living room in both, boxing one up, and starting again if neither is right. Two weeks and three shipping labels later, you have a boot you’ve never actually seen in daylight.
Boots are the hardest thing in a wardrobe to buy sight unseen. The last, the vamp, the instep, the way the shaft sits on your calf — all of it varies by style, and none of it is legible on a screen. Leather changes it again: calf, ostrich, lizard, and caiman all break in differently and sit differently on the same foot.

What actually changes the fit
Four variables, none of them visible online
- Toe shape
- Snip, round, and square change both the fit at the toe box and how the whole boot reads on you. A snip toe elongates. A round toe is the safest first boot. A square toe is a statement, and it either suits you or it doesn’t — you will know in five seconds wearing it.
- Heel height
- A roper heel walks easily and works with a slimmer trouser. A taller riding heel changes your posture and your hem length. If you are on your feet all day, this decision matters more than the leather.
- Leather
- Calf is smooth, forgiving, and breaks in fast. Ostrich is soft and flexible with a distinctive quill pattern and moves with the foot early. Lizard is finer and more formal. Caiman is structured and the most dressed-up of the group. They do not fit identically even at the same nominal size.
- Shaft and instep
- Getting the foot in is the whole trick with a western boot — there is no lacing to adjust. Instep volume varies by last, and a boot that slides on easily in one style may not in another. This is the single most common reason an online order goes back.

A boot isn’t an outfit
Anyone can sell you the boot. The question is what you wear it with — and whether your trousers were hemmed for it.
The hem changes
Trousers hemmed for dress shoes are wrong over a boot. The break sits differently on a vamp than on an oxford. We hem to the boot, with the boot on your foot.
The leg opening changes
Your denim needs enough opening to clear the shaft — roughly sixteen to seventeen inches. If a pair you love is too narrow, that’s usually a taper away from fixed.

Will you hem my jeans or trousers to fit over the boots?
Yes, in-house. Trousers hemmed for dress shoes sit wrong over a boot, because the break falls on the vamp rather than the shoe. Bring the boots — or buy them here and we will hem to them directly. Denim that is too narrow to clear the shaft can usually be tapered or replaced with a cut in the right leg opening.
