The navyblazer
If you own one jacket, this is the one. The only real decision is the weight.
A lightweight navy blazer made to measure at The Man’s Shop in Arlington. In tropical wool or hopsack it is comfortable outdoors for most of the year here and indoors through winter, which is as close to a year-round jacket as this climate allows.
What matters
Worth knowing
- Weight is the decision
- Around 7.5 ounces. Heavier and you will not wear it eight months of the year; lighter and it loses its shape.
- Hopsack or tropical wool
- Both are open weaves that move air and resist wrinkling. Hopsack has more texture, tropical wool is smoother.
- Buttons
- Horn rather than metal reads more modern and less like a uniform. Metal is traditional and entirely correct.
- What it goes with
- Gray, stone, cream and tan trousers, and dark denim. That is most of a wardrobe.
- Unlined or half-lined
- Takes real heat out of the jacket. Worth specifying here.
The process
Two visits, not five
- First appointment
- About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
- Build
- Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
- Collection
- Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
- Alterations
- Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
- Afterwards
- Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

What weight blazer works in Texas?
Around 7.5 ounces in an open weave — tropical wool or hopsack. That is comfortable outdoors for most of the year and indoors in winter, when air conditioning makes the season largely academic.
Horn buttons or metal?
Horn reads more contemporary and slightly less formal; metal is traditional and correct, particularly on a true blazer. Neither is wrong, and horn is the safer choice if the jacket needs to work casually.
Should it be unlined?
In this climate, yes, or half-lined at most. Removing the lining takes genuine heat out of a jacket, and it only works on a well-made one because the internal finishing becomes visible.

100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, parking beside the building. Monday to Saturday, ten until five, closed Sundays.
