The short answerThe Man’s Shop · Arlington, Texas · Est. 1972

A custom sport coat made to measure at The Man’s Shop in Arlington. It is the single most useful garment in a modern wardrobe — it dresses up denim, works over a knit polo, and covers most of a Dallas week without needing a matching trouser.

What matters

Worth knowing

Why a jacket first
It works over more of what you already own than any other garment. A suit only works as a suit.
Navy hopsack
If you own one sport coat, this is it. Open weave, holds shape, works with gray, stone, tan and denim.
Soft shoulder
Unpadded and half-canvassed. Cooler, more comfortable, and better suited to this climate than a structured jacket.
Patch pockets
Read casual and lighten the jacket visually. Standard on the coats we fit for this purpose.
Second jacket
Texture — a check, a herringbone, or something in a warmer tone.

The process

Two visits, not five

First appointment
About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
Build
Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
Collection
Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
Alterations
Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
Afterwards
Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

Common questions

Sport coats, answered

What is the difference between a blazer and a sport coat?

A blazer is traditionally navy with metal buttons and slightly more formal. A sport coat is any odd jacket meant to be worn with contrasting trousers, usually in a textured cloth. In practice the terms have blurred and most people mean the same thing.

What should my first sport coat be?

Navy hopsack with a soft shoulder and patch pockets. It works with gray, stone, tan and dark denim, which covers most of what you already own, and the open weave suits the climate here.

Can I wear a sport coat with jeans?

Yes, and it is one of the main reasons to own one. Dark, clean denim with a clean hem and a narrow leg opening. What does not work is a suit jacket with jeans — the cloth and the cut give it away.

Where are you and what are your hours?

100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, parking beside the building. Monday to Saturday, ten until five, closed Sundays.
