A wide-leg trouser lives or dies on the rise and the length, and ready-made gets both wrong.
Wide-leg trousers made to measure at The Man’s Shop in Arlington. The rise sets where the waistband sits and the length is cut for specific shoes, because a wide leg that is half an inch too long drags and half an inch too short looks unfinished.
What matters
Worth knowing
- Rise
- Higher generally works better with a wide leg — it lengthens the line and stops the trouser looking heavy.
- Drape
- Cloth with weight hangs properly. A light, stiff cloth makes a wide leg look like a tent.
- Length
- Cut for one pair of shoes. If they need to work with flats and heels, bring both and we will compromise deliberately rather than accidentally.
- Cloth
- Mid-weight wool, wool-linen for summer. Both drape; a light synthetic does not.
- Waistband
- Fitted properly so it sits without a belt, which is most of what makes the trouser look expensive.
The process
Two visits, not five
- First appointment
- About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
- Build
- Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
- Collection
- Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
- Alterations
- Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
- Afterwards
- Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

What rise should wide-leg trousers have?
Higher rather than lower. A wide leg from a low rise makes the whole trouser look heavy, where a higher rise lengthens the leg line and lets the cloth fall properly from the hip.
How long should they be?
Just brushing the top of the shoe, cut for one specific pair. Half an inch too long and they drag; half an inch short and they look unfinished. If they must work with two heel heights, we compromise deliberately.
What cloth drapes best?
Mid-weight wool, or wool-linen for summer. Weight is what makes a wide leg hang rather than balloon, which is why light synthetic versions never look right.
