A dress size describes almost nothing about how a jacket will sit on your shoulders.
Made-to-measure women’s suits at The Man’s Shop in Arlington, directed by Patrick Milligan. Shoulder, waist, hip, sleeve length per arm and jacket length are all measured. Four to six weeks, alterations in-house, and cost driven by the cloth rather than the making.
What matters

- Shoulder
- Cut to your slope, and the one thing no alteration meaningfully fixes afterwards.
- Waist and hip
- Measured rather than inferred from a size. It is where ready-made tailoring most often fails.
- Sleeve per arm
- Measured separately, because arms differ.
- Jacket length
- Proportioned to your torso rather than a size chart.
- Trouser or skirt
- Cut for the shoes you will wear. Bring both pairs if it needs to work with flats and heels.
The process
Two visits, not five
- First appointment
- About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
- Build
- Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
- Collection
- Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
- Alterations
- Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
- Afterwards
- Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

How is this different from alterations?
Alterations adjust a garment cut for someone else. Made to measure starts from your measurements, which means the shoulder and the proportions are right from the beginning rather than compromised.
Who will I be dealing with?
Patrick Milligan directs our ladies’ made-to-measure work and handles the order from measurement through to collection.
Can I order separates?
Yes, and many customers do. A jacket with two different trousers or skirts produces more outfits than a single matched suit for a similar spend.
Where are you and what are your hours?
100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, parking beside the building. Monday to Saturday, ten until five, closed Sundays.
