Pale blue,kept quiet

Pale blue is easier to wear than most men assume and harder to wear well than they expect.

Downtown Arlington · Serving Dallas–Fort Worth by appointment
The short answerThe Man’s Shop · Arlington, Texas · Est. 1972

A pale blue blazer made to measure at The Man’s Shop in Arlington. It sits between a navy jacket and a genuinely bold color, works from spring through early fall, and reads as considered provided the cloth has texture and the cut stays conventional.

What matters

Worth knowing

Where it sits
More interesting than navy, considerably safer than green or yellow. A good second or third jacket rather than a first.
Cloth matters most
Linen blend, textured cotton or a hopsack. A flat, smooth pale blue reads synthetic even when it is not.
Trousers
Cream, stone and white. Gray works and is more formal. Avoid navy, which reads as a failed attempt at a suit.
Season
March to October. It looks out of place in December in a way navy never does.
Shirt
White, or a very pale pink. Blue on blue needs a clear difference in tone to work.

The process

Two visits, not five

First appointment
About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
Build
Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
Collection
Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
Alterations
Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
Afterwards
Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

Common questions

Blazers, answered

How many jackets should I own before this one?

At least one navy. A pale blue jacket is a good second or third and a poor first, because it does not cover formal occasions or cold months and navy covers both.

What shoes work with a pale jacket?

Brown suede in a mid tone, or a tan loafer. Black is too severe against pale cloth and reads as a mismatch rather than a contrast.

Will it look dated?

Not in a conventional cut and a textured cloth. What dates is a fashion-forward silhouette and a flat, shiny fabric, both of which announce the year they were bought.

Where are you and what are your hours?

100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, parking beside the building. Monday to Saturday, ten until five, closed Sundays.
