What a visitlooks like
Nobody hovers. Nothing is upsold. Most first visits take twenty minutes.
The Man’s Shop is an independent menswear store at 100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, serving Arlington since 1972. Tailored clothing, sportswear, shoes and custom work, with our own tailor on site. Monday to Saturday, ten until five.
The visit itself
Worth knowing
- Walk in or book
- Browsing needs no appointment. A fitting or a custom order does, and you can book Austin or Patrick by name.
- What happens first
- We ask what you are dressing for. That question does most of the work, and it saves you being shown things you have no use for.
- Trying things on
- Take your time. Nobody works on commission here in a way that makes the experience uncomfortable.
- If it needs altering
- Enrique is on site. He will pin it while you are wearing it rather than working from a note.
- If we do not have it
- We will say so, and where relevant tell you who does.

Who you will deal with
- Wally Hardin
- Owner. Has been fitting customers in this building since 1972 and is usually in the shop.
- Austin Roberson
- Store manager and buyer. Selects most of the range and runs the Private Label line.
- Patrick Milligan
- Haberdasher, and directs our ladies’ made-to-measure work.
- Enrique
- Master tailor, over twenty years with us. Every alteration is done by him, on site.
- What that means
- The person who measures you is the person who sees the order through. It is the main practical difference from a department store.

The shop, answered
Can I just browse without buying?
Of course. Walk in during opening hours, look at whatever you like, ask whatever you want. Plenty of long-standing customers started with a visit where they bought nothing.
How long does a first visit take?
Twenty minutes if you are looking, about an hour if you are being measured for something custom. We would rather you left with nothing than with something that does not work.
Can I bring my wife or partner?
Frequently a good idea, and plenty of customers do. A second opinion in the room usually produces a better outcome than a photograph sent from the fitting room.
What if I do not like it once I get home?
Come back and talk to us. We would rather adjust something or take it back than have you own a garment you avoid wearing.
Do you alter clothing bought somewhere else?
Yes, routinely. Enrique works on garments from anywhere, and it is often how new customers first come to us.
