Custom denim,measured

Off-the-shelf denim gives you a waist and an inseam. Everything else is assumed.

The short answerThe Man’s Shop · Arlington, Texas · Est. 1972

Custom denim for men who cannot get a shelf-bought pair to work. Waist, seat, thigh, rise and leg opening all specified rather than averaged. It is the answer for athletic builds, long or short legs, and anyone tired of a waistband that gaps at the back.

What matters

The measurements that decide it

Who it is for
Athletic thighs with a smaller waist, a long or short rise, or a seat that a standard cut does not accommodate. If shelf denim gaps at the back, this is why.
What gets measured
Waist, seat, thigh, knee, rise and leg opening, taken on you rather than inferred from a size.
Cloth
Weight and stretch content chosen for how you actually wear them. Heavier for durability, a little stretch for comfort.
Lead time
Four to six weeks, the same as our tailoring.
After the first pair
The pattern stays on file, so the second is a shorter conversation.

Getting it right

How we work

Bring your shoes
Hemming is judged standing, in the shoes you will wear. It is the single most common reason a hem gets redone.
Try, do not order
Cuts vary between makers and between models. Five minutes in a fitting room beats any size chart.
Alterations on site
Enrique works in the building, so pinning happens with you in the garment.
We will say no
If a pair does not work on you, we would rather tell you than sell it.
Keep a note
We record what you bought and what it needed, which makes the next pair easier.

Common questions

Custom denim, answered

Who actually needs custom jeans?

Men whose waist and seat measurements are far apart, which is most athletic builds, and anyone with an unusual rise. If your jeans fit the thigh and gap at the waist, no amount of alteration fixes it properly and custom does.

How much do custom jeans cost?

More than a good pair off the shelf and less than most men assume, with cloth driving most of the difference. We will show you the range at the fitting.

Can you alter jeans I already own instead?

Often, and we will say so if that is the better answer. Waist, length and taper are all adjustable. What cannot be fixed is a rise that is wrong for you.

Where is the shop?

100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, with parking beside the building. We have been at it since 1972.

Will someone follow me around the shop?

No. Tell us what you are looking for and we will leave you to it, or help if you want help. Nobody here benefits from pressuring you into something that does not work.

What are your hours?

Monday to Saturday, ten until five. Closed Sundays.
