The dress code nobody defines and everyone is judged on. Here is what it actually means in DFW offices, industry by industry.
Business casual in DFW now means soft tailoring rather than khakis and a polo. An unstructured blazer, a knit or oxford shirt, and flat-front trousers or clean dark denim reads as professional in most offices here. The shift
Fit and fabric, not category rules
The old formula — khakis, a polo, done — reads as dated now. What replaced it is harder to write down and easier to recognize: clothing chosen for how it fits and what it is made of, rather than which category it belongs to.
The practical test is versatility. A knit blazer with dark jeans now reads as professional as a sport coat with dress trousers did five years ago. Hybrid work pushed this along — men need one outfit that survives a video call, a client lunch, and an afternoon at a desk.
What has not changed is that fit decides everything. A cheap jacket that fits beats an expensive one that does not, and everybody can tell the difference even when they cannot name it.

DFW is not one dress code
- Finance and law
- Lean formal. A blazer is expected, a tie is optional. Conservative colors, proper shoes. This sector is growing here quickly — the Texas Stock Exchange began trading in Dallas in July 2026, and JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs and Charles Schwab have all expanded into North Texas. Expect the standard to firm up rather than relax.
- Tech and startups
- More latitude. Clean dark denim is fine, and a knit polo under a soft jacket is a common uniform. Avoid looking like you tried too hard or not at all.
- Healthcare administration
- Polished but practical. You are on your feet and in front of people all day. Nothing trendy, nothing that needs fussing with.
- Real estate and sales
- Client-facing, so sharper. This is where a properly fitted jacket earns its keep — you are the product for the first ten minutes.
- Creative
- Personality is allowed and often expected. Texture and color, not slogans. The tailoring still has to be right underneath.
What to own
The pieces that carry the load
- Two or three blazers
- Navy, gray, and one with pattern or texture. Unstructured or half-lined — no heavy padding, natural shoulder, patch pockets. These do more work than anything else you own.
- Five to seven shirts
- Oxford button-downs in white and light blue, linen-cotton for summer, and a couple of knit polos with a collar that holds its shape.
- Three or four trousers
- Flat-front chinos in navy, gray, olive, and tan, plus lightweight wool for year-round wear. Slim-straight or tapered, nothing baggy.
- One pair of dark denim
- Clean indigo or black, no rips, no heavy fading. Worn with a sport coat it reads completely differently from weekend jeans.
- Shoes in brown and black
- Leather, kept polished. The fastest way to undo a good outfit is the wrong shoes.

Is it worth spending more on one blazer than on three?
For most men, yes. One well-made jacket in good cloth gets worn weekly for years and photographs well throughout; three cheap ones get worn until the shoulders collapse and then replaced. If the budget only stretches to one good thing, make it the jacket.
Should I wear a tie with business casual?
Usually not, though a knit tie is a useful thing to own for the days when a meeting turns out to be more formal than expected. In finance and law a tie is often still welcome; in tech it can read as trying too hard.
