A clip, nota wallet
A thick wallet ruins the line of a jacket and wears through the pocket it sits in.
M-Clip money clips at The Man’s Shop in Arlington. A clip carries cards and notes without the bulk that distorts a jacket, and a well-made one holds its tension for years rather than splaying out after a few months. Worth handling before choosing.
What matters
Worth knowing
- Why a clip
- A folded wallet in an inside pocket destroys the line of a jacket. A clip does not.
- Tension
- The whole point. A good clip grips consistently; a cheap one loses its spring and stops holding.
- Capacity
- Realistically four to six cards and some notes. If you carry more, a slim card case suits you better.
- Finish
- Match it to your other metal — watch, buckle, cufflinks. One tone throughout.
- As a gift
- One of the few accessories that suits almost anyone, which is why they move steadily around the holidays.
The process
Two visits, not five
- First appointment
- About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
- Build
- Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
- Collection
- Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
- Alterations
- Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
- Afterwards
- Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.
Common questions
Accessories, answered
What should I look for in a men’s accessory as a gift?
Something useful and unsized. Clips, card cases and belts in a safe finish all work. Ties and anything requiring a size are far riskier unless you know the person’s taste well.
What makes one money clip better than another?
Tension, principally. A well-made clip holds its grip for years; a cheap one splays out within months and stops holding anything. It is the difference you cannot see in a photograph.
Do money clips make good gifts?
They are among the safest accessories to give — useful, not sized, and not tied to taste in the way a tie or a belt is. They move steadily here through the holidays for exactly that reason.
