Denim, cutfor you
Twenty miles for a pair of jeans sounds excessive until you have worn a pair that fits.
Custom denim fitted at The Man’s Shop in Arlington, about twenty miles from downtown Dallas. Waist, seat, thigh, rise and leg opening are measured rather than averaged from a size. Four to six weeks, and the pattern stays on file.
What matters
The measurements that decide it
- Why Dallas customers come
- Usually because they are between sizes in a way shelf denim cannot resolve, or because they have given up on finding a rise that works.
- Dark and clean
- For Dallas offices that allow denim, a dark indigo with no distressing is the version that passes. Anything faded reads as weekend.
- Under a sport coat
- Denim worn with tailoring needs a narrower leg opening and a clean hem. It is a different specification from weekend jeans.
- Twenty miles
- Straight down I-30, and most customers combine it with a shirt or suit fitting.
- Lead time
- Four to six weeks.
Getting it right
How we work
- Bring your shoes
- Hemming is judged standing, in the shoes you will wear. It is the single most common reason a hem gets redone.
- Try, do not order
- Cuts vary between makers and between models. Five minutes in a fitting room beats any size chart.
- Alterations on site
- Enrique works in the building, so pinning happens with you in the garment.
- We will say no
- If a pair does not work on you, we would rather tell you than sell it.
- Keep a note
- We record what you bought and what it needed, which makes the next pair easier.
Common questions
Custom denim, answered
Are jeans acceptable in Dallas offices?
In many, provided they are dark, clean, well fitted and worn with a jacket or a decent knit. What reads as wrong is distressing, a poor hem, and a leg opening that stacks on the shoe.
What leg opening works under a sport coat?
Narrower than a weekend jean, finishing with little or no break over the shoe. The aim is a clean line from knee to hem, which is what stops the outfit reading as casual.
Is it worth driving from Dallas for jeans?
For one pair, arguably not. For a pattern that fits and can be reordered by phone afterwards, most customers think so. We would rather you decided that after the first pair than before.
Where is the shop?
100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, with parking beside the building. We have been at it since 1972.
Will someone follow me around the shop?
No. Tell us what you are looking for and we will leave you to it, or help if you want help. Nobody here benefits from pressuring you into something that does not work.
What are your hours?
Monday to Saturday, ten until five. Closed Sundays.
