Soft yellow,worn well
Yellow is the shirt color most often bought badly and least often worn afterwards.
A soft yellow dress shirt made to measure at The Man’s Shop in Arlington. In a good cloth it is a genuine alternative to white under navy or gray. In a cheap one it reads immediately as synthetic, which is why this is a color worth spending on rather than economising on.

- Pale yellow in a poor cloth looks synthetic under office lighting. In a fine poplin or royal oxford it looks quietly expensive.
- What it goes under
- Navy and mid-gray. It is excellent under a navy jacket and poor under brown or olive.
- Ties
- Navy, burgundy, and quiet patterns. Avoid anything else warm, which fights the shirt.
- Season
- Spring and summer principally. It reads out of place against winter cloth.
- Collar
- Spread or semi-spread. A soft point collar in a pale color looks limp.

- About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
- Build
- Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
- Collection
- Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
- Alterations
- Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
- Afterwards
- Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

Is a yellow shirt professional?
In a soft, pale tone and a good cloth, yes — it works under navy or gray the way a pale blue does. Anything brighter moves into territory that will be noticed for the wrong reason.
What tie goes with a yellow shirt?
Navy or burgundy, or a quiet pattern drawn from those. What does not work is another warm color, which competes with the shirt rather than sitting against it.
Why does cloth matter so much in pale colors?
Because there is nothing to hide behind. A poor weave in navy looks acceptable; the same weave in pale yellow looks synthetic under office lighting. It is the color where spending more is most visible.
