Shirts thathold their shape

A collar that collapses under a lapel undoes an otherwise good suit, and it is visible across a table.

The short answerThe Man’s Shop · Arlington, Texas · Est. 1972

Dress shirts for Dallas, custom and ready-made, fitted at The Man’s Shop in Arlington. The collar has to hold its shape against a lapel, which is where soft ready-made collars fail. Spread or semi-spread in a cloth with body is the specification that works.

What matters

Worth knowing

Collar under a jacket
Needs structure. A soft, unlined collar collapses inward the moment a jacket goes on.
White and pale blue first
In client-facing Dallas industries these two do nearly all the work. Pattern is a third and fourth shirt.
Twill for the commute
Holds up better in a car than poplin, which is more comfortable and creases more.
French cuffs
Still worn in Dallas finance and law more than elsewhere here. Specify if your office runs formal.
How many
Around ten if you wear one daily, which allows weekly laundering without repeating.

The process

Two visits, not five

First appointment
About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
Build
Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
Collection
Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
Alterations
Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
Afterwards
Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

Common questions

Custom shirts, answered

What collar works under a suit jacket?

Spread or semi-spread, in a cloth with enough body to stand on its own. The test is whether the collar keeps its shape when the jacket goes on — a soft collar collapses and it is obvious across a table.

How many dress shirts do I need?

About ten if you wear one every day. That allows weekly laundering without wearing the same shirt twice in a week, which is also what makes them last.

How should a dress shirt fit at the shoulder?

The seam should sit at the edge of your shoulder, and the yoke should lie flat across your back without pulling. Get that right and the rest is adjustable; get it wrong and nothing else rescues the shirt.

Where are you and what are your hours?

100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, parking beside the building. Monday to Saturday, ten until five, closed Sundays.
