Made to measure solves big-and-tall fit because the garment starts from your measurements rather than a size chart. The Man’s Shop in Arlington, Texas cuts suits, sport coats, and shirts to your proportions, including sleeve length, rise, and neck. Our in-house tailor handles adjustments when the garment arrives.
The real problem
A size chart is an average, and you are not one
Big-and-tall ranges scale a standard pattern up. They rarely account for the fact that men of the same chest measurement have entirely different shoulders, arms, and posture.
The usual result is a jacket that fits somewhere and fails everywhere else: right in the body, short in the sleeve, wrong through the shoulder. A tailor can fix the sleeve. He cannot rebuild the shoulder.
Made to measure starts at the other end. We take your measurements, including the ones standard sizing ignores, and the garment is cut to them. Nothing is scaled from an average.
What we account for
Measurements that off-the-rack skips
- Shoulder slope
- One shoulder is usually lower than the other. Standard patterns assume they are level, which is why so many jackets pull across the back.
- Sleeve length
- Measured individually. Arms differ in length more often than most men realise.
- Chest to waist drop
- The ratio between chest and waist is fixed in standard sizing. In made to measure it is whatever yours is.
- Rise and seat
- The single most common trouser complaint, and the one alterations handle worst. Cut correctly from the start.
- Neck and cuff
- Dress shirts made to your neck, sleeve, and cuff rather than the nearest half inch on a chart.

Big and tall, answered
Does made to measure cost more for big and tall sizes?
Cloth is the main driver of price, and a larger garment uses more of it, so there can be a modest difference. It is far smaller than most men expect, and we quote at the appointment with swatches in front of you before anything is ordered.
Can you make shirts for a large neck and long sleeve?
Yes. Made-to-measure shirts are cut to your neck, chest, waist, sleeve length, and cuff rather than to the nearest chart size. For men who have spent years choosing between a collar that fits and a body that does not, this is usually the first thing they order twice.
Will a custom suit make me look slimmer?
A properly proportioned garment always reads better than one that is too large. The instinct with a bigger build is to size up, which adds bulk. Cutting to your actual measurements gives a cleaner line without the garment feeling tight.
Do you carry big and tall off the rack as well?
We carry a range on the floor and our tailor can take it a considerable distance. Come in and try things on. If off-the-rack gets you where you want to be, we will say so rather than push you toward custom.
How long does a custom suit take?
Typically four to six weeks from the appointment where we measure you to collection. You come in once to order and once to pick up. There is no series of fittings in between.
What if the fit still is not right when it arrives?
Enrique adjusts it here. Because the garment is cut to your measurements, most need little or nothing. When something does want changing, it happens in our alterations room rather than being shipped back to a factory.
