A rented tuxedo fits approximately. Yours fits, and you have it next time.
Tuxedos and formal wear sold, not rented, at The Man’s Shop in Arlington. Off the rack with alterations, or made to measure in four to six weeks. Over three or four formal events a rented tuxedo costs more than owning one, and it never fits properly.
What matters
Worth knowing
- We do not rent
- Everything is sold. It is cut for you, it is yours afterwards, and across three or four events it costs less than renting.
- Black tie, properly
- A dinner jacket in midnight blue or black, a proper bow tie you tie yourself, and no long tie. Those three cover most of what people get wrong.
- Off the rack or custom
- Both work. Off the rack plus alterations is faster and often right; custom is for when the fit or the cloth needs it.
- Shirt and studs
- A formal shirt with a marcella or pleated front, studs rather than buttons. We will sort the details.
- Shoes
- Patent is traditional, a well-polished plain black oxford is entirely acceptable and more useful afterwards.
The process
Two visits, not five
- First appointment
- About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
- Build
- Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
- Collection
- Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
- Alterations
- Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
- Afterwards
- Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

Do you rent tuxedos?
No. Everything we fit is sold, which means it is cut for you rather than approximately for someone your size. Across three or four formal events it works out cheaper than renting, and it fits properly every time.
What does black tie actually require?
A dinner jacket in black or midnight blue, matching trousers with a braid down the leg, a formal shirt, a bow tie you tie yourself, and black shoes. A long tie is the most common error and it is always noticed.
How long before an event should I come in?
Six to eight weeks if you want something made, two to three if you are buying off the rack and having it altered. Sooner is better in the run-up to gala season.
Where are you and what are your hours?
100 S. West Street in downtown Arlington, parking beside the building. Monday to Saturday, ten until five, closed Sundays.
