Looking smart in August is a construction problem before it is a cloth problem.
A summer suit made to measure at The Man’s Shop in Arlington. Half-lined or unlined construction, a high-twist or tropical wool around 7.5 ounces, and a cut with slightly more room through the chest. Those three together are what make a suit wearable here in August.

- Construction first
- Removing the lining takes more heat out of a suit than dropping an ounce of cloth.
- Tropical wool
- Open weave, around 7.5 ounces, and it still looks like a proper suit rather than a summer compromise.
- High twist
- Resists creasing and recovers on a hanger overnight, which matters if you drive to work.
- A little more room
- A close-cut jacket becomes uncomfortable within an hour in heat. Slightly more room through the chest, same precision at the shoulder.
- Color
- Mid-gray and navy still work. Stone and tan read as summer without reading as casual.
The process
Two visits, not five
- First appointment
- About an hour. Cloth, measurements, and a conversation about how you actually wear the garment.
- Build
- Four to six weeks. Nothing is rushed and nothing is sent overseas without us knowing where it is.
- Collection
- Twenty minutes. Anything needing adjustment goes to Enrique, who works on site.
- Alterations
- Included on what we make. There is no separate bill at collection.
- Afterwards
- Your pattern stays on file, so the next order is a phone call.

Summer suits, answered
Can a summer suit still look formal?
Yes, provided you change the construction rather than the formality. An unlined tropical wool suit in navy reads as a proper suit. A rumpled linen one in stone does not, however comfortable it is.
What weight cloth for a Texas summer?
Around 7.5 ounces in a high-twist or tropical weave. Lighter than that and the suit loses its shape; heavier and you will not wear it between June and September.
Is a lining necessary?
Not through the body. Half-lining keeps the structure where it matters and removes the layer trapping heat across your back, which is the single most effective change for this climate.
