The most misread line on any invitation. It isn’t a trap, and it isn’t an instruction to guess.
Black-tie optional means a tuxedo is welcome but not required. A dark suit in navy or charcoal with a conservative tie is equally correct. In Texas, boots and a hat are commonly worn with either, provided the rest is right. The Man’s Shop fits both in Arlington.
What the host means
An invitation, not a test
Black-tie optional is the host saying: this is a formal evening, we would love it if you wore a tuxedo, and we will not think less of you if you wear a good dark suit.
Both answers are correct. Neither is a compromise. The mistake is not choosing the suit — it is choosing a suit that is not quite formal enough, or a tuxedo worn with the wrong shirt and shoes.
If you own a tuxedo, wear it. If you do not, wear your best dark suit and get the details right. Nobody at the event will be counting tuxedos.
Getting it right

- Black or midnight blue, formal shirt, bow tie, and formal shoes. Worn properly it is never overdressed at a black-tie-optional event.
- If you wear a suit
- Navy or charcoal, and genuinely dark. A conservative tie in silk, a white or pale shirt, and well-polished shoes. Business grey with a patterned tie reads as an office suit and misses.
- What not to wear
- A dinner jacket with a business shirt, a black suit with a bow tie hoping it passes, or anything you would wear to work on Tuesday.
- Boots, in Texas
- Commonly worn with either, and worn well. The trousers need to be hemmed for the boot rather than a dress shoe, which is a different break entirely.
- A hat
- Also common here, and correct at plenty of Texas events. Read the room and the venue; if in doubt, ask the host, who will be pleased you did.
