Three waysto buy a suit
The terms get used loosely and often interchangeably by people selling one of them. Here’s the actual difference, including where we’re an interested party.
Off-the-rack is a finished garment altered toward you. Made to measure adjusts an established pattern to your measurements, taking four to six weeks and one appointment. Bespoke drafts a pattern from scratch with basted fittings over several months. Most men are best served by made to measure.

The Man’s Shop sells off-the-rack and made to measure. We do not offer traditional bespoke, so read what follows with that in mind — though you will find we recommend bespoke where it genuinely fits.
The honest summary is that the three are not a quality ladder. They are three different trades between time, money, and how unusual your proportions are.
A well-chosen off-the-rack suit properly altered beats a badly specified custom one. That is not the answer most shops give.
The actual differences
Pattern, fittings, and time
- Off the rack
- A finished garment built to a standard pattern, then altered toward you. Shoulders and chest cannot be meaningfully changed, so fit has a ceiling. Fastest and least expensive. Right if you are close to a standard size.
- Made to measure
- An established pattern adjusted to your measurements before the garment is cut. No basted fitting. One appointment, four to six weeks. Solves proportional fit problems, which is what most men actually have.
- Bespoke
- A pattern drafted from scratch for you, with two or three basted fittings — trying on a partly built garment so it can be corrected. Months, and considerably more expensive. Right for genuinely unusual proportions or for the experience itself.
- What alterations can fix
- Sleeve length, waist, trouser length and taper, and a good deal of the body. This is why off-the-rack works for many men.
- What alterations cannot fix
- Shoulder width and slope, chest, and overall balance. If these are wrong, no amount of tailoring rescues the garment — which is the case for made to measure.
Choosing
A short decision
Try off the rack first
If a jacket fits your shoulders and chest off the rack, alterations will take it the rest of the way for less money. We will tell you if that is you.
Move to made to measure
If shoulders never fit, if your drop is unusual, or if you want cloth and details that the floor does not carry.
Consider bespoke
If your proportions are genuinely unusual, or you want the process itself. We will happily point you toward it; it is a fine thing.

What is the difference between made to measure and bespoke?
Bespoke drafts a pattern from scratch and uses basted fittings, where you return two or three times to try on a partly built garment. Made to measure adjusts an established pattern to your measurements before cutting, with no basted fitting. Bespoke takes months; made to measure takes four to six weeks.
Is made to measure worth it over off-the-rack?
It depends on your proportions. If off-the-rack jackets fit your shoulders and chest, alterations will get you most of the way for less. If they never fit through the shoulders, or your chest-to-waist drop is unusual, made to measure solves what alterations cannot.
Is bespoke better than made to measure?
Not automatically. Bespoke offers more control and a pattern drafted entirely for you, which matters most for unusual proportions. For the fit problems most men have, made to measure delivers what they want in a fraction of the time and cost.
What can a tailor not fix on an off-the-rack suit?
Shoulder width and slope, chest, and the overall balance of the jacket. Sleeves, waist, trouser length, and taper are all straightforward. This is why the shoulders are the first thing to check when trying a jacket on.
Does The Man’s Shop offer bespoke?
No. We offer off-the-rack and made to measure. If your situation genuinely calls for bespoke we will say so rather than sell you something else, and we can point you in the right direction.
Which should I choose for my first good suit?
Come in and try off-the-rack first. If it fits through the shoulders, buy it and let our tailor finish the job. If it does not, made to measure is the sensible next step. Either way you will get an honest answer before you spend anything.
