When off-the-rack is right

Sooner than custom, better than a rental

Custom takes about six weeks. Sometimes you do not have six weeks — and a rental is still the wrong answer.

An off-the-rack tuxedo bought and altered properly outperforms any rental, because it is altered to you and only you. Nobody lets it out again next month for a man two sizes larger.

It is also yours afterward. The next invitation is not a scramble, and the one after that is not either.

If your shoulders are hard to fit, custom is still the better road. Come in and we will tell you which you are.

Common questions

Off-the-rack tuxedos, answered

How quickly can I buy a tuxedo off the rack?

If we have your size on the floor you can try it on the day you come in. Plan on roughly two weeks for alterations so the fit is right. If your event is closer than that, call us and we will tell you honestly what is achievable rather than guess.

Is an off-the-rack tuxedo better than a rental?

Yes, in almost every case. A rental is cut generously so it can be let out and taken in for the next man. An off-the-rack tuxedo is altered to you alone and stays that way, and you own it afterward rather than returning it.

What sizes do you carry?

Stock varies through the year and around the event calendar. Call ahead with your size and we will tell you what is on the floor before you drive in, and what we can bring in if it isn’t.

Do you alter the tuxedo in-house?

Yes. Our tailor of more than twenty years handles all alterations on the premises. Nothing is shipped out, and if something needs adjusting after you have worn it, you bring it back to the same person.

Can I upgrade to custom instead?

Certainly, and we will lay out the trade-off plainly. Custom takes about six weeks and lets you choose cloth, lapel, and facing. Off-the-rack is faster and less expensive. Which is right depends on your date and your shoulders.

Does The Man’s Shop rent tuxedos?

No, and we never have. If renting is genuinely right for your situation we will say so and point you elsewhere.
